Don't ever let me hear anyone suggest that radio is the poor relation of TV. Not so! Radio has an intimacy and an immediacy that no other media can create. And much as I love working on television (lots more money - it has to be said!) radio will always be my first love.
I first got into radio in 1988 quite by chance, but fell in love swiftly and powerfully and that love that has remained loyal and steadfast over the years. After many years of working in independent local radio and BBC local radio, I was thrilled to be given the chance to present The Late Show over the vast geographical territory that is Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
It's a fascinating area with a wide variety of different listeners There are those on the East coast, an area disheartened by the loss of the fishing industry but with new heart and hope is embracing new technologies to generate a brighter future; those in North Yorkshire, many of whom have seen their fortunes change in those troubled recent years which inflicted foot and mouth disease, radioactive contamination from Chenobol and flood damage, yet with the indomitable northern spirit continue to battle on. And, of course, there are listeners in those cities that have risen to the forefront of commerce and leisure, with Leeds and Sheffield attracting new business and showing the south that we won't be left behind. A magnificent area with much to be proud of... I am honoured to have been a part of it.
The Late Show, as any good radio production, was a team effort.
On my left is Kim. You may well have heard her lovely voice on during one of our many chats.
Charlotte is on my right and, as if it isn't bad enough that she is younger than me, she's taller as well! Now is that fair, I ask you?
Sadly, the Alex Hall Late Show came to an end on the last day of July, 2006, and my daily broadcasts from BBC Tees resulted in a 12 hour time-shift; broadcasting from 10am rather than 10pm. as was the case with the Late Show.
You can listen to me live on BBC Tees by installing the free RealPlayer add-on.
